Dialectical Behavior Therapy

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a skills based approach that helps you manage intense emotions, cope with stress, and improve relationships.

It is built on the idea of balancing acceptance and change. This means learning to accept yourself and your experiences while also working toward meaningful change.

DBT is especially helpful for people who experience strong emotions, difficulty regulating emotions, or challenges in relationships.

How does DBT work?

DBT focuses on building practical skills that you can use in everyday life.

In our work together, we may:

  • Learn strategies to manage intense emotions

  • Practice mindfulness to stay grounded and present

  • Develop skills for coping with distress

  • Work on improving communication and relationships

  • Build awareness of emotional patterns and triggers

DBT is both supportive and structured. It provides clear tools while also encouraging acceptance and self understanding.

What happens in sessions?

Sessions may include both conversation and skill building.

In sessions, we may:

  • Talk about current challenges and emotional experiences

  • Learn and practice DBT skills

  • Explore situations where strong emotions come up

  • Work on applying skills to real life situations

  • Reflect on what is working and what needs support

You may also practice skills between sessions to help reinforce what you are learning.
